Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room Etiquette at KTC Jacksonville.
We welcome you to our weekly practice of Tibetan Buddhism.
To help you feel most comfortable attending a traditional Buddhist
shrine room we offer these basic guidelines to shrine room etiquette.
Shoes are removed before entering the shrine room and hats
are not worn.
The acceptable posture for practice is to sit cross-legged
on a cushion on the floor.
(If this is not possible because of
physical problems, one may sit in a chair.)
Short skirts and revealing garments are not appropriate attire
for practice.
Do not sit with the legs outstretched, as this is a sign of
disrespect.
Do not lie down in the shrine room.
Dharma books & puja texts should not be put on the floor,
but on a table or cushion.
Dharma books & texts should not be stepped over.
It is appropriate to stand when a Lama enters the room, sitting
only after the Lama is seated.
When entering the shrine room, a Buddhist practitioner may
do three prostrations facing the shrine, or make a short bow
with hands folded. This is done as a symbol of the surrender
of oneself and the desire to benefit all beings.
